Eaglecrest is a great "little secret" of a ski resort located about 12 miles from Juneau via the North Douglas Highway. The resort itself, a community owned operation, has a vertical drop of about 1401 feet and its 31 trails are spread out over 640 acres of terrain which includes everything from easy, wide open cruisers, to tight and challenging chutes; from a terrain park and tubing to steep faces and open bowls. Natural snowfall is extremely important to Eaglecrest since only 16% of their terrain is coverable by snowmaking, but when the natural stuff is falling and you don't want to deal with crowds it's a good spot to consider. Terrain The terrain at Eaglecrest is pretty well distributed to accommodate skiers and riders of all ability levels and although the majority of it is rated intermediate or higher, the 20% or so for the beginners offers plenty of variety. True beginners will want to start with rentals and a lesson, both obtainable at the lodge, and spend time on Muskeg and Dolly Varden off the new Beginner Chairlift. Those with a little more experience will want to head up the Hooter double chair for a few more options including a couple of intermediate runs, Ego and the bottom half of Hilary's. For the more experienced skiers and riders take the Ptarmigan double chair right to the top. Easy Bowl to Williwaw is a nice long and easy slope but other than that things get a little more challenging up here. Hilary's top-to-bottom is a great intermediate run and the advanced folks in your party will enjoy dropping down The Face about a third of the way down and meeting up at the bottom. Or they might just choose to try the East Bowl Chutes and head up the Mid-Mountain lift instead to do it all over again. Off-slope Fun Eaglecrest is all about local family fun, with most of the visitors being local families with children. As such there is more to do here than just skiing or riding. As mentioned tubing is available as is about 5km of cross-country skiing. In nearby Juneau there are plenty of restaurants, lodgings and shops as well.
